ADT has been serving Home and Business Security customers in America for 140 years.   They have an excellent, long standing reputation along with name-recognition in the security industry.  Now ADT offers to protect not only your home or business, but also you.

ADT offers 3 medical alert package options to meet your individual safety needs whether you are primarily home bound or frequently out and about in your community. You will find the details on each of these systems below along with who, and under what circumstances, each may be ideal.

Meanwhile, lets take a brief look at how one of these medical alert systems work, and who really needs one.

How Medical Alert Systems Work:

Medical Alert Systems provide customers with a 24/7 fingertip activated emergency response system to help cover any situation, anywhere, in which the customer needs help.  Help could mean anything from accidentally sliding out of your chair and needing a friend to help you up, or a true medical emergency in which you need an ambulance right away.

Either way, the customer need only press their emergency help button and a live, trained operator will answer their call.   The operator will ask if the customer is OK, what is happening, and help to determine what level of help is required.

Then the operator will call and initiate the level of help needed while staying connected with their customer and talking to them until help arrives.   If for any reason the customer is able to press their help button but is unable to speak emergency service will automatically be dispatched.

Medical Alert operators may also be able to direct your emergency help right to your exact location (GPS tracking options), explain how to enter your home safely without breaking down the door, and even direct emergency personnel to where your medical information is located so that they will know your medications, allergies, and medical conditions and can start providing you prompt and accurate care right away.

You will not receive these services by simply calling 911.  Only a medical alert system will provide you with this level of medical and emergency coverage.

Who Really Needs a Medical Alert System?

medical alert system

I have been a Registered Nurse for over 10 years providing direct care to seniors in my community and know how important it is for seniors to receive prompt medical care in the event of an emergency.  I have also seen first hand the sometimes devastating effects of those who do not.

So, ask yourself

  1. How will I get the help I need when I need it?
  2. Am I the only adult who can regularly help me in my own home?
  3. Do I have a chronic medical condition such as diabetes or heart failure that sometimes gives me trouble?
  4. Have I been back and forth to the ER several times this year?
  5. Have I fallen this year?
  6. Am I afraid of falling and/or do I feel my balance isn’t as good as it used to be?

If you are a senior and you answered yes to any of the above questions, a medical alert system could not only save your life but also be the key to maintaining your independence in the future.   You do not want to wait for help when you need it most.

Why falls matter:  Did you know? (according to the CDC and Falls

  1. at least 1 out of 4 people age 65+ will fall this year
  2. falling one time DOUBLES your risk for falling again.
  3. 1 in 5 of those falls will result in a serious injury such as a hip fracture or traumatic brain injury
  4. every 20 minutes someone in the US DIES from a fall.

How ADT Can Help:

call center support

Service

ADT offers 3 different medical alert packages all of which are connected into their US based, company owned and operated call centers.   ADT boasts that it is their caring, senior sensitive staff who will earn our trust and set them apart from other medical alert providers.

Pricing

Pricing wise ADT is slightly higher than some other providers with packages starting around $30/month.   However, they also offer a 6 month money back guarantee and free activation for new customers, and you have the option to pay monthly, quarterly, or annually although no discounts are noted for extended contracts.

Product Use and Guarantee

ADT’s medical alert devices are designed to be very simple and easy to use.  However, if you need help with installation or trouble-shooting they do offer theses services as well and even have the user guides and product manuals for all of their equipment available online for their customers convenience.   ADT also offers a lifetime warranty on all of their products with free replacement (unless the item is lost or stolen).

Fall Detection Option

ADT does offer an automatic fall detection pendent accessory for 2 of their plan packages that can be purchased for a small monthly fee to offer customers extra security in the event of a fall.  This is in addition to the medical alert system you will also need to purchase.  It does not replace your medical alert system.

NOT ALL FALLS will be detected.  However, nearly any fast or high impact fall where injury is most likely to occur should be recognized by the system which will automatically call for help.   If the user is not able to verbally respond (due to being unconscious from a sudden stroke, heart attack, or head injury for example) a pre-set emergency plan will be activated to send help right away.

ADT Packages

informed decision

ADT basic:

ADT’s Basic, in-home medical alert system is their least expensive and not as complex as other systems.   It comes with a 2 way communication base-station and your choice of a waterproof help button pendent or wristband.   There is NO automatic fall detection available for this package.

Features and requirements:

  1. landline phone line is required
  2.   300 foot “straight air” range from pendent to base-station.    This means that the help button pendent may not be able to communicate with the base station everywhere inside your home and almost certainly will NOT be able to communicate if you step outside your home to get your mail or let your dog out.
  3. 12-20 hour battery back-up in the event the base unit is accidentally unplugged or there is a power outage.  When the battery gets too low it will automatically contact ADT call center staff who will attempt to call you via phone to let you, or your contact list, know to plug it back in, etc.
  4. Continuous in home temperature monitoring that will alert you and your contact list if the temperature in the home is too high or too low for safety.
  5. If you are already on the phone with someone else when there is an emergency and you push your help button the base station will try to call the call Center 8 times before emitting a high pitched scream to let you know it cannot communicate.  Ideally you would hang up your phone in an emergency.
  6. This system does not automatically test itself or check in with the ADT call Center.  ADT recommends you check the system monthly.

The ADT basic package is ideal for seniors who live in a very small space and are basically home bound or residing in a community setting such as a retirement home or foster care and do not have access to a pendent style call system to obtain help.

If you are concerned about falling or want to be able to move around safely in a larger area, consider ADT’s Medical Alert Plus or On the Go Emergency Response Systems.

ADT Plus:

The ADT Plus Medical Alert system is a step above their Basic in-home package.   It does not require a landline but instead is connected to the ADT Call Center through AT&T’s wireless network.   You do not have to have AT&T to use this service but you should check AT&T coverage in your area before considering this device.

ADT Plus comes with a 2 way communication base station and your choice of waterproof help button pendent or wristband and/or a fall detection pendent.

Features and Requirements:

  1. AT&T wireless network coverage in your area.
  2. Fall Detection pendent is optional with this system.   The pendent itself is fairly lightweight but bulky in size.
  3. extended 600 foot “straight air” range from your pendent to the base-station.  However, you still need to communicate through base-station.  So, if your base-station is in the living room and you fall outside in your garden and need help up, chances are the call center will not be able to hear you.   If they can’t hear you, ADT will automatically dispatch emergency services.
  4. 12-20 hour battery back-up in the event the base unit is accidentally unplugged or there is a power outage.  When the battery gets too low it will automatically contact ADT call center staff who will attempt to call you via phone to let you, or your contact list, know to plug it back in, etc.
  5. Continuous in home temperature monitoring that will alert you and your contact list if the temperature in the home is too high or too low for safety.
  6. This system does not automatically test itself or check in with the ADT call Center.  ADT recommends you check the system monthly.

The ADT Plus Medical Alert system is ideal for seniors with larger homes and a more active lifestyle.  Keep in mind that either the basic or the plus systems require you to be able to speak with the base-station when you need help,  wherever it is located.  If the call center operator cant’ hear you, they will call emergency services to get you help.

So, if you want increased control of your communication with call center operators, along with increased freedom to go about your day without unnecessary interruptions AND having the benefit of still being able to get and direct help when you need it, consider ADT’s On the Go Emergency Response System.

ADT On the Go Emergency Response System

ADT On the Go offers a fully portable GPS tracking AT&T cellular connected 2 way communication device that can go with you anywhere.   It comes with your choice of waterproof help button pendent or wristband and/or a fall detection pendent.  Also included is a charger cradle, power cord, and mobile carrying case.

Features and Requirements:

  1. AT&T wireless network coverage in your area.
  2. Must be 100 feet away from mobile device in order for your pendent or wristband to communicate with it.    Essentially you need to carry the device with you, although you can, for example take it in the restroom and leave it on the counter while you take a shower.
  3. Fall Detection pendent is optional with this system.   The pendent itself is fairly lightweight but bulky in size.
  4.  indicator lights for battery life help you know when you need to charge your device.   They do recommend daily charging.
  5. This system does not automatically test itself or check in with the ADT call Center.  ADT recommends you check the system monthly.

The On the Go Emergency Response system is ideal for active seniors who don’t mind carrying around the somewhat obvious communication device in order to maintain their freedom and sense of safety wherever they go.

confident deciding

The Bottom Line:

ADT is an outstanding company with a strong and long history of customer satisfaction the home and business security industry.   Their new personal medical alert system options are adequate to help protect seniors at most stages in life.   There are other medical alert providers that do offer more sophisticated systems with more medical and technological options.   However, if you already know and trust ADT, or already use their security services and don’t want to have another company’s monthly bill to pay.   ADT may be right for you.
